I t's i-asy to korgi-t the many negativi; influences that shade our attitudes about life. Without consciously thinking about it, we can adopt the feelings, beliefs, and prejudices of those around us. Many of our attitudes are adopted unwittingly. Some of our most strongly held opinions were not born of our own experience of the world, but picked up from parents and others we admire. Make the effort to understand and empathize with all people. Listen, learn, and evaluate situations for yourself. Ask questions, think carefully, and withhold judgment until you really understand the situation. Stay open to opportunities to give of your talents rather than slamming the door shut on an issue, simply because a parent, teacher, or other mentor once dismissed it. Remember the importance of being a role model. Demonstrate caring and giving behavior of others, and set an example by making a difference in the lives of those around you. We all admire the inspiring examples set by the world's greatest givers, such as Nelson Mandela. Gandhi, and Mother Teresa. But we can also name an auto mechanic, nurse, or grocery store clerk who excels at giving. The simple act of saying, "Thank you," reminds you and those around you to appreciate and value the difference that giving makes. Most community organizations have activities that require community members to work together. Whether it is cooking for a potluck supper, volunteering at a neighborhood garage sale, building a house for Habitat for Humanity, or taking a meal to the homebound, look for opportunities to join in. By participating and doing, you will feel first-hand the remarkable effects of your loving gifts. Throughout your life, you will give many gifts—birthday gifts, holiday gifts, gifts of the heart, and gifts of the spirit. The most important gifts, however, are your unique talents. Your greatest hour will be the one in which you recognize, accept, and use your unique gifts in a way that will help make the world a better place.
