Demartini earned his Bachelor of Science degree while majoring in Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston in 1978 and was accepted at Texas Chiropractic College earlier that year. In 1982, Dr. Demartini acquired his Doctorate Degree and graduated Magnet Cum Lcnide, as Salutatorian of his class. In addition, he earned a Special Achievement Award in Clinical Practice. Throughout his clinical training, he specialized in somatopsychic and psychosomatic health disorders while undergoing curricular and extracurricular studies in clinical psychology. Opening his first chiropractic office in 1982, within the first four years, Dr. Demartini's Houston practice grew to three times its original size, including five associate chiropractors and support staff. By 1986, he was in one of the largest chiropractic facilities in Houston. His practice efforts were concentrated on somatopsychic and psychosomatic correlations. Then, in 1986, he sold his initial practice and dedicated his energies to speaking, consulting and writing. Being asked to speak at Parker Seminars and other chiropractic management organizations and associations, beginning in 1984, Dr. Demartini began an extensive speaking career, helping chiropractors and other health professionals around the world grow their practices and their personal lives so they could become more inspired and successful. He is the founder of the Demartini Human Research and Education Institute, which offers a series of personal and professional educational and development programs to students in over fifty-six countries. He has appeared on over 2500 television and radio talk shows and is the originator of The Breakthrough Experience", which is a two-day personal development program, designed to help individuals break through emotional and mental barriers that are stopping them from achieving the dreams they feel they deserve. His stress resolving methodology, called The Demartini Method™, has helped millions overcome the shock and impact of post-traumatic stress and resolve conflicts within themselves and among others. Today, Dr. Demartini is considered by many to be one of the most informative and inspiring professional I speakers in the world. His < dynamic presentations have helped inspire millions internationally to become more fulfilled and successful. In an interview with The A merican Chiropractor, Dr. Demartini tells us about his path to success in chiropractic and life. TAC: What inspired you to become a chiropractor? Do you have a specific story? DEMARTINI: 1 dreamed of being a healer from the age of seventeen. It was at that time that I had almost died of strychnine poisoning. In my recovery, I was blessed to meet and become inspired by Paul C. Bragg, the famous health enthusiast, naturo- path and longevitist. It was Mr. Bragg who encouraged . me to return to school. (I was, at the time, a high school drop out.) With his assistance, I experienced an inspiring vision of traveling the world and becoming a great teacher, healer i and philosopher. It was not until a few years later, though, when I was backpacking in Peru and visiting Machu Picchu, that I became inspired to become a chiropractor. It was there that I read The Chiropractic Story by Marcus Bach. And it was there that I fell in love with k the philosophy of our great profession. I have been in love with the power of chiropractic philosophy ever since. TAC: When you were in practice, your practice grew quickly and ultimately had as many as five chiropractic associates. To what do you attribute your secret to success in practice? DEMARTINI: I was on a mission of chiropractic healing and was inspired by teaching and healing. I was also willing to do whatever it took. I was speaking daily to groups all over the city and at my clinic, nightly. 1 was doing many TV and radio shows and sharing the message. I was encouraging whole families to experience chiropractic. I worked at refining my procedures daily. I delegated, utilized stats and checklists and monitored and standardized my procedures. I took the best of each staff member and cross-trained them and made each of them time and, then, practice their procedures in between their live patient performances. I hired exceptional doctors who had dreams and staff members that loved what they did and were willing to put in the hours and refine themselves for their mission. We rehearsed and practiced on invisible patients until they resulted in real live people that we were able to serve. There were no options allowed, but the fulfillment of the mission, goals and objectives. TAC: Can you explain to our readers what your seminar program entitled The Breakthrough Experience is? TAC: What single piece of advice would you give a new chiropractor just starting out? DEMARTINI: Get truly clear on what you would love as far as the practice of your dreams. Associate with doctors that have similar dreams, but are possibly farther along the road, who can act as mentors for you. Save, and learn to invest a portion of whatever you make from day one. When you invest in yourself, so docs the world. When you value yourself, so does the world. Ask yourself what worked and what didn't work every day and refine your procedures daily. Streamline, prioritize and delegate. Keep working toward what you would love to do most. Hire quality staff that would love to do that and who will help. TAC: What general advice would you give an established chiropractor whose practice might be struggling? DEMARTINI: When the why is big enough, the how's take care of themselves. Get a big enough reason for blowing past your limitations. Don't allow yourself excuses. Associate with people who will hold you accountable for what has proven to work. Get your butt in gear. Let nothing on the face of the earth stop you from your mission. Get clear about what you truly would love to create. Make sure your practice goals align with your highest values, so you will be inspired from within to achieve them. TAC: What is the most common problem you see among chiropractors today? DEMARTINI: Instead of taking a leadership roll and deciding where they would love to lead the profession, some chiropractors are asking, "Where is it heading?" Action cures fear and transcends excuses. The key is to fill your day with high priorities, not low ones, and to decide where you would love to go. Allow no excuses to run your game. Have a vision bigger than your obstacles and your obstacles won't be in your way. TAC: What is the biggest problem or challenge you see in the chiropractic profession today? DEMARTINI: Unless there are chiropractors with visions greater than the obstacles, the obstacles will tend to override their vision. Astronomical visions leave global effects. Playing small does not serve the profession; but embracing the destiny of your soul to contribute to the profession on massive scales does. Give yourself permission to leave a legacy and make your mark in chiropractic. TAC: Can you think of one change that a chiropractor can do to significantly impact his/her practice's growth immediately? DEMARTINI: Focus on service. Care enough to com- municate in patients' values. Do the little things that count. Speak out. Those with a mission have a message. Let nothing stop you from sharing your chiropractic message. Ask what worked and what did not work each day, and refine your procedures daily until you have created a masterpiece out of your practice. TAC: Do you have any recommended marketing strategies that chiropractors can do to attract new patients and/or to keep current patients? DEMARTINI: When your innermost dominant thought becomes patients', their innermost dominant thought becomes your office. When you can't wait to get up in the morning to serve thousands of patients, they can't wait to be served. Let nothing stop you from your dream of serving humanity. Be willing to do whatever it takes, travel whatever distance, and pay whatever price to serve your patients with love, and they won't want not to be with you. Like all plants grow to the sun for guiding light so, too, do patients grow to the enlightened chiropractor who is willing to shine his/her mission brightly. The more people you meet and greet, the more you will treat. Let the world know you are here on a mission. TAC: Where do you see the future of chiropractic headed? DEMARTINI: 1 see the profession expanding, as new visionaries emerge and guide the profession into the 21st century. Our mission is to minimize subluxations and maximize the expression of life. It is impossible for humanity to express its greatest potential as long as people are subluxated. It is impossible to stop an idea whose time has come.
