Chiropractic Colleges
June 1 2008

Every year we like to touch base with the chiropractic colleges who hold the hefty weight of molding the future of our chiropractic profession. This year, we asked each of them to give us a brief update on their latest developments along with their pass rates on the boards. Here's what they told us in their own words. Cleveland Chiropractic College Cleveland Chiropractic College-Kansas City, one of the oldest non-profit chiropractic colleges in America, recently became the newest— on a stunning 34-acrc campus in Overland Park, Kansas. Decades ofCleveland history, tradition, knowledge and achievement have gone into the development of the state-of-the-science classrooms, labs and patient care facilities all just minutes from the heart of Kansas City in Overland Park, an attractive, vibrant and safe suburban city recently rated as one of the top 10 cities to live in by Money Magazine. You will discover affordable housing, excellent schools, great restaurants, quality shops and exciting outdoor recreation. Our new Kansas City campus is the cornerstone for the continuing expansion ofCleveland Chiropractic College's success in education, research, and patient care. It represents a powerful new base for serving our students, our community, and advancing chiropractic. The college now maintains two health centers, one in Overland Park and the other in Kansas City, MO. It also operates the Cleveland College Well-ness Center inside Truman Medical Center-Lakewood. CCCKC interns are eligible to participate in several ofT-site clinics, includingTruman-Lakewood, KC Free Health Clinic, and through an academic affiliation agreement, at the Kansas City Veterans Administration Hospital. In addition to its D.C., B.S., and A.A. degrees, the college, pending approval of the North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission, will begin offering a Master's degree in Health Promotion, projected to begin in 2009. The college is in the final phases of a $4.5 million renovation project that has substantially upgraded the facilities and created a bright, inviting learning environment for current and future students of chiropractic. The renovations include a newly remodeled health center, rotunda and cafeteria, as well as the student media center. CCCLA, with its convenient and centrally located urban Health Center at the Hollywood Freeway and Vermont Ave., provides the intern with a dynamic and diverse patient experience. Interns may also participate in the interdisciplinary program at the Venice Family Clinic, the largest free health care clinic in the United States. In addition, an affiliation between Cleveland College and the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine has led to a program that involves Cleveland students interacting with USC medical students during "chiropractic rotations" at the University Park Health Center on the USC Campus. Cleveland interns also provide care at the University Park I lealth Center on the USC Campus, as well as at the Los Angeles Mission. The Commitment is designed for each of the 1.000 participating upper-level institutions to be responsible for reducing its environ- mental impact. With the new agenda in mind. Life University has created a strategic plan to accomplish by 2020, which details specific goals to achieve the green initiatives on campus. New construction and all major renovations are driven by the President's Climate Commitment. Each building reconstruction strives to reach the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards of gold and platinum buildings. Life's platinum level buildings actually produce more energy than they consume. The most recent building renovation is the Wcllness Center that received a complete, state-of-the-art renovation to accommodate students, staff, and faculty in their efforts to maintain optimum fitness levels. The College of Undergraduate Studies and the College of Chiropractic have also received complete renovations. During the holiday season. Dr. Guy F. Riekeman president of Life University presented the executive board members with bicycles to use for transportation on campus. I le used this opportunity as an introduction to creating a walking campus. As opposed to students driving from one building to the next, the University plans to give each new student a bicycle to lessen the amount of gas emissions produced by automobiles on campus. Instead, the University is breaking ground to build a parking garage on the campus perimeter, replacing the asphalt with grass, and developing gracefully landscaped, weather protected walkways to reduce the heat generated from the asphalt, as well as the University's carbon footprint. In support of local farmers, the University has created an organic farmers' market in the 19th Century Village on campus. The market provides an opportunity for local, organic farmers to sell their produce to the Life Community and to the public during the week. Life University has accepted the challenge of pursuing climate neutrality and encourages its students, staff and faculty to take part. Not only is Life University one of the top chiropractic schools in the nation, but it is a performance-centered institution, committed to setting a standard of excellence in contemporary health care education. Life University's mission is to produce skilled professionals through high quality, integrative approaches to its chiropractic, undergraduate and masters programs. At Logan, every dollar of tuition revenue is reinvested into chiropractic education, thus ensuring the school's commitment to high-quality education. Recently. Logan opened a Career Development Center (CDC) under the direction of Ms. Linda Kenny, M.A. The CDC combines Internet technology with individual guidance from experienced career advisors who help students identify professional opportunities well in advance of graduation, while continuing to provide alumni with professional support long after they complete their DC studies. On Memorial weekend, Logan will open the new Standard Process" Student Center. It will include both recreation and relaxation areas and a new Student Services Office, which will serve as a buffer between these different use areas, as well as a mezzanine level with an all natural light cascading waterfall. The center's amenities will include a television lounge, game room, collaborative study tables, research carrels with Internet access, wireless technology, meeting rooms, and vending and snack stands. In addition, the student center will feature Charlie's Grab'n Go. a quick stop source of upscale coffees and sandwiches. Logan's campus also houses the BIOFREEZE" Sports and Rehabilitation Center as a resource for chiropractors and other health care providers whose patients require advanced assessment and treatment of sports and non-sports related injuries. Under the direction of Laney Nelson. DC. D.A.C.B.S.P.. a nationally-known figure in the world of chiropractic sports injury care and rehabilitation. Logan students and interns leam hands-on rehabilitation techniques. In 2007. Logan College of Chiropractic entered a new era with the official public opening of the S22.7 million William D. Purser Center, a 47.000 square-foot, state-of-the-art auditorium on its Chesterfield campus. The new building development was part of an 18-month development project that was the largest capital campaign in the college's 73-year-history. It included the creation of a number of other campus enhancements, such as a new student plaza, improved campus entrances, upgraded roadways, pedestrian walkways, and additional student parking. Logan offers students an impressive academic environment along with an attractive suburban setting. The Chesterfield campus, which is 30 minutes west of downtown St. Louis, is situated on 112 acres of wooded hilltop property. In fall 2007. MSNBC selected Logan College of Chiropractic's campus as one of "America's Most Beautiful College Campuses." The naturopathic medicine degree program, which accepted its first students in Fall 2006. was granted eandidaey by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNMI-) on March 9. 2008. Candidacy is not accreditation and does not ensure eventual accreditation, but it is a status of affiliation with the Council that indicates the naturopathic medicine program is progressing toward accreditation. (For information on this process, contact: CNMH. 342 Main Street, P.O. Box 178, Great Barrington. MA 01230 or call 413-528-8877.) "This not only puts NUI IS right on schedule for meeting important milestones in the accreditation process." says Fraser Smith. ND. assistant dean for naturopathic medicine at NUI IS, "but will also allow our first ND graduates to sit for important licensure exams." National University received permission to offer the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine Degree Program, as well as programs leading to the Master of Science Degree in Acupuncture and the Master of Science Degree in Oriental Medicine, from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, prior to kicking off the professional degree programs in 2006. Naturopathic medicine is not licensed in the state of Illinois at this time, so experts in this area do not work independently but, rather, contribute to the delivery of care by other licensed personnel. Currently, 14 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have licensing laws for naturopathic physicians. Several other states are actively moving toward licensure of naturopathic physicians, including Illinois, where the Illinois Association of Naturopathic Physicians successfully persuaded the legislature to pass a bill to study the profession. However, accreditation from the profession's own governing body, the CNME is a multi-faceted and multi-year process. Such is the case for accreditation of the master's degree programs by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). The ACAOM conducted a site team visit in April as part of the candidacy approval process for these programs. Palmer's West Campus and Nationwide Insurance and Financial Services, in conjunction with the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, teamed up to launch the Silicon Valley Moon Walk Challenge on April 16, 2008, during a kick-off event on the West Campus. Participating team members wear pedometers and keep a running total of the number of steps taken, with the goal of logging enough steps to (theoretically) walk to the moon. The underlying motive is to encourage more physical activity in daily routines, and start a trend that will keep people walking long after the challenge is over. The West Campus Wellncss Committee issued a healthy challenge to Chamber members, the business community, and other Silicon Valley organizations to join a community-wide walk to the moon. The student plaza is named for Gordon and Helen Brown, who have resided on campus since mid-2000, when they sold their home in Sedona, Arizona, and used the funds from the sale of their home to construct the """ Brown House, and Museum on the Sherman campus in Spartanburg. The Urowns have supported and contributed generously to Sherman College in many ways over the years. In 1993, they became Regents and, in 1997. they made a generous estate commitment to the Sherman College Endowment Trust. In addition, Sherman College has constructed a low ropes course for its upcoming Clinic Challenge Program, thanks to a generous grant from the Straight Chiropractic Education and Research Foundation. Our students share basic and health science courses as well as graduate research studies with students from the College's other health discipline programs including occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, physician assistant, and dietetics. This integration broadens the academic experience, encourages dialogue, and develops the mutual understanding respect required for patient-centered, interdisciplinary care delivery. The Council on Chiropractic Education granted D'Youville's Doctor of Chiropractic Program full accreditation in the spring of 2007. Our program continues to flourish with increased enrollment and ex-, panded interdisciplinary clinical training opportunities within the Western New York area. In May, 200X D'Youville was proud to graduate the first cohort of Doctors of Chiropractor. | Website: www.dyc.edu Program duration: 8 semesters Cost per semester: $8,800 Pass Rates on Boards: Part 1-83.3%, Part 11-100% Part Ill-NA, Part IV-NA
