"Gentlemen, damn the sphenoid bone!"
- Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), opening an anatomy lecture at Harvard Medical School
I don’t know what Holmes was complaining about; perhaps he was frustrated at his inability to adjust the sphenoid (he was an MD after all).
For most of my chiropractic career, I limited my practice to correcting spinal subluxations. While developing Koren Specific Technique (KST), a vitalistic analysis and adjusting technique, I was often directed to correct cranial subluxations. The cranial bone calling for the most attention was the sphenoid.
What’s a sphenoid?
The sphenoid is a butterfly shaped bone (sphenoid means butterfly) at the anterior base of the skull.
The sphenoid directly or indirectly articulates with every bone in the skull; if the sphenoid is subluxated, the entire skull and meningeal system may be affected. A sphenoid subluxation can affect total body structure.
The sphenobasilar (SB) junction
The sphenoid articulates with the base of the occipital bone to form the sphenobasilar (SB) junction, one of the most vital articulations in the body. It serves as a “pump” (the sphenobasilar pump) to move cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which bathes the nervous system, delivering nutrients, removing wastes and modulating the neuroimmune system.
NOTE: In all photos the sphenoid is the yellow bone, the occiput is purple and the sphenoid and occiput join at the sphenobasilar junction represented by a black line.
Histologically, the sphenobasilar joint is a synchondrosis. It does maintain some degree of flexibility throughout life.1
The sphenoid, the occiput and the petrous portion of the temporal bones are modified vertebrae joined by a modified intervertebral disc structure in a synchondrosis…there remains some mobility of the sphenobasilar.2
The sphenoid/sphenobasilar subluxation
If the sphenoid is subluxated, it can greatly impact physical and mental health.
Conditions related to sphenoid/sphenobasilar subluxation include: depression; endocrine disturbances; migraine; headache; impairment of taste, smell, hearing and speech; disturbances of movement and trembling; disturbance of temperature regulation; increased intracranial pressure; memory disturbances; impairment of brain function; “brain fog”; insomnia; disturbance of lacrimal and nasal glands; problems with drainage of the nasal cavities; double vision; strabismus; deviation of the eyeball; ptosis of the eyelid; vision problems; tinnitus; deafness; disturbances of the vagus nerve (nausea and vomiting) and other conditions.3
According to Dr. M. B. De Jarnette: “The list of symptoms involved in this subluxation is practically endless…. Nothing can disturb as many cranial nerves as can the sphenobasilar subluxation. The sphenobasilar must always involve the occiput and the sphenoid….”4
The sphenoid makes up a portion of the “eye socket” (see top photo at left). That may be one reason sphenoid subluxations cause vision, nasal and related problems. Migraine or headache coming from the eye is often an indication of sphenoid subluxation.
Palpating the sphenoid
The sphenoid is easily palpated behind each eye (see bottom photo at left) and most commonly subluxates anterior or posterior and, less commonly, inferior or superior.
With KST, we’ve re-discovered that there is rarely a sphenoid subluxation without an occipital subluxation. The occipital bone usually subluxates inferior, sometimes with laterality as well.
Fixing the sphenoid pattern with KST
Koren Specific Technique (KST) was developed to analyze, easily and quickly, and correct (adjust) the entire structural system, including the cranial bones.
Segments in question are analyzed for listing by challenging; the body reaction is observed. KST uses the base of the skull reaction: the occipital/mastoid drop (OMD). This is similar in practice to the muscle weakness phenomenon of applied kinesiology (AK) or the short leg reflex of directional non-force technique (DNFT)/Truscott.
The occipital/mastoid drop permits the practitioner to accomplish analysis with great speed. Additionally, the practitioner can analyze the patient in posture of subluxation/dysfunction very easily. An advantage of using the OMD is that the practitioner has the ability to self-analyze and self-adjust.
After the listings are determined, we recommend using an adjusting instrument to correct the involved segments. Often the patient is adjusted standing or sitting. Usually no table is needed.
The ArthroStim™ adjusting instrument taps or “toggles” at 12 cycles per second, which appears to be a healing frequency. I’ve noticed that infants find this rhythm especially relaxing. Sometimes they smile or laugh during a correction. In a pinch, a hand-held adjusting instrument may work as well as a thumb toggle (á la DNFT).
The sphenoid is contacted behind each eye. The stylus of the adjusting instrument is placed with a line of drive opposite to the subluxation.
If the sphenoid is anterior, for example, the line of drive is anterior to posterior.
Note: You only need to touch the adjusting gun to the sphenoid for less than a half second. As a general rule of adjusting, but especially with cranial work, use the least amount of force.
Adjusting the sphenobasilar subluxation “pattern”
The typical sphenoid or sphenobasilar junction “pattern” is most commonly the following:
1. Left and right sphenoid wings are anterior (one or both wings).
2. May be anterior on one side and posterior on the other side.
3. There may be inferiority/superiority on either side.
4. The occipital bone goes inferior and sometimes lateral.
After the sphenoid pattern is corrected, patients often report feeling “lightness.” Sometimes they may remark that their vision is clearer or sharper. Headaches, even migraines, may stop suddenly. Chronic illnesses begin to go into remission. In addition, mood and depression improve and a sense of calm and relaxation is often reported.
Koren Specific Technique, developed by Tedd Koren, DC, is a quick, easy way of locating and correcting subluxations anywhere in the body. Patients hold their adjustments longer and, because it is a gentle, low-force technique, it’s easy on the doctor too. An additional (and very important) bonus for KST practitioners is the ability to specifically analyze and adjust themselves. For seminar information, go to

Fight or Flight
Life has its scary moments and, in a life or death situation, the proper reaction may make the difference between, well, life or death.
Fortunately, we are “hard-wired” to improve our chances of surviving dire emergencies with our “fight or flight” or “acute stress” response.
How does it work?
At the sign of danger, we have two options: fight (confront the threat) or flight (avoid the threat). Within moments, a cascade of changes occur in the body and we can run faster, jump higher, hit harder, see better, hear more acutely, think faster and focus more intensely than we could only seconds earlier. Bodily functions not needed for struggle shut down: digestion stops (our mouth feels dry), sexual function stops, even our immune system is temporarily turned off. If necessary, excess waste is eliminated to make us light on our feet (and possibly dissuade an attacker!).
Additionally, our heart starts pumping two-to-three times its normal speed, sending nutrient rich blood to the major muscles in our arms and legs. The tiny blood vessels under the surface of our skin close down, so we can sustain a surface wound and not bleed to death (this makes our skin turn pale). At the same time, our blood pressure rises, so life-giving fluid reaches our muscles faster, sweating increases to cool our muscles and help them stay efficient and our eyes dilate so we can see better.
After that terrific expenditure of energy, when the danger has passed, we must rest to restore our depleted reserves.
But, our reactions in day-to-day human interaction are, well… complicated.
For most people, stress remains chronic—it doesn’t let up.
For example, we can’t kill our spouses, our bosses, the idiot in the truck who almost sideswiped us, or the government.
We usually can’t run away from them either (OK, maybe the idiot in the truck). The danger is never over, so we don’t get the rest we need and our reserves continue to be depleted.
Living in a stress-filled body
Continuous, unresolved stress causes a buildup of stress hormones and we become aggressive, anxious, over-reactive, irritable and hyper-vigilant. Eventually a person in this state has less energy, a weakened immune system and various stress-related disorders, such as heart disease, headaches, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, depression, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, allergies and premature aging among others.1
What can we do?
Turning to drugs (and surgery) to suppress stress symptoms generally means the body and mind continue to deteriorate while we are, superficially, feeling fine.
Fortunately, an increasing number of people are turning toward the natural, drugfree, non-surgical “alternative” approach.
This approach seeks to reduce stress levels and strengthen an individual’s ability to handle stress.
More people are turning to yoga, meditation, exercise, psychotherapy, nutrition, herbs, homeopathy, acupuncture, massage, shiatsu, craniosacral therapy and other natural approaches. What about chiropractic?
The structural panic pattern
Chiropractic has a unique approach to dealing with stress.
The fight or flight response was originally discovered and researched by the great Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon in the 1920’s. Cannon and his associates, being physiologists, studied the body’s reactions to danger by limiting their observations to a person’s chemical, vascular and internal organ changes.
Chiropractors using Koren Specific Technique (KST) have discovered that structural changes in the body are also involved in the fight or flight response. We refer to this as the panic pattern.
What is the panic pattern?
The panic pattern is the structural component of the fight or flight response. It consists of the following:
1. The coccyx (tailbone) moves anterior (forward). The meninges, protective and structural coverings over our brain and spinal cord, are anchored at the coccyx. When the coccyx moves anterior, the meninges tighten over the brain and spinal cord, girding us for battle. This is seen in dogs when they tuck their tails between their legs as they run in fear. Similarly, our tails also go anterior.
2. The sternum moves superior. This provides better protection for our heart and lungs.
3. The zyphoid process moves anterior. Breathing often “freezes” during frightful experiences. This helps us concentrate and conserve our energy.
4. The larynx moves superior. It appears to be a response due to emotional suppression and is not seen in every case.
5. The pubic symphysis moves superior. Purpose not known (perhaps it relates to the coccyx). This is not seen in every case.
Which comes first—the emotion or the posture?
The body’s life is the life of sensations and emotions. The body feels real hunger, real thirst, real joy in the sun or snow, real pleasure in the smell of roses or the look of a lilac bush; real anger, real sorrow, real tenderness, real warmth, real passion, real hate, real grief. All the emotions belong to the body and are only recognized by the mind.–D.H. Lawrence
Which comes first, the emotional reaction or the postural change? That may sound like an odd question–don’t we feel an emotion and then our body reacts? Doesn’t the emotional stress come first?
Although we may think that we “feel” scared and then assume a scared posture, studies reveal that the opposite may occur: postures may not just reflect internal states but rather produce them.
For example, researchers discovered that tasks performed in “defeated” or “helpless” postures (slouched) create a sense of defeat or helplessness more easily in patients. When people perform the tasks in erect spinal positions, the sense of defeat (giving up) or “helplessness” takes far longer to manifest.2-4
This is similar to finding that, by physically smiling or frowning, irrespective of our emotional state, we create a chemical physiology of happiness or sadness.
The locked panic pattern
After the danger is over, our body structure relaxes: our coccyx returns to its rightful place, releasing tension on the meningeal system; our sternum falls; our zyphoid moves posterior; our larynx and pubis drop. However, for some, the structural system remains locked in fight-or-flight (panic pattern) mode. The locked structural panic pattern may keep the body in a fight or flight response mode, preventing our physiology from returning to normal.
Finding and correcting the panic pattern
Using KST protocols, we can quickly and easily analyze and correct or adjust the entire structural system, including the cranial bones. It is ideal for correcting the panic pattern.
First, segments in question are analyzed for listing, using a challenge, and the body’s reaction is observed. KST uses the base of the skull reaction for analysis: the occipital/mastoid drop, a biofeedback phenomenon similar to the muscle weakness in applied kinesiology (AK) or the short leg reflex of directional non-force technique (DNFT)/Truscott. The occipital/mastoid drop permits the practitioner to accomplish analysis with greater speed and permits the practitioner to check the patient in the posture of subluxation/dysfunction/injury more easily.
After the listings are determined, an adjusting instrument is used to correct the involved segments.
The patient is usually adjusted in standing or sitting posture. I use the ArthroStim™, setting it at 12 taps per second.
In a pinch, a hand-held adjusting instrument may work. You can also use a thumb toggle (á la DNFT).
1. Coccyx. The coccyx listing is determined by gently challenging it anterior. It is not necessary to perform an internal rectal adjustment to release the coccyx. The patient is fully clothed, usually standing, and the contact point is on a lower segment or tip of the coccyx. The coccyx is lightly tapped inferior to posterior and quickly springs back into proper position. The amount of time needed to adjust the coccyx (or any segment using KST) is less than a half second.
2. Larynx. Challenge inferior to superior with your thumb and forefinger. Using the small width fork with an adjusting gun, gently tap both sides of the larynx superior to inferior.
3. Sternum. Contact is superior to inferior with the adjusting gun. I usually contact the sternum in two or three places–first at the manubrium, then at the upper and middle sternal body. Your patients will be amazed at how sensitive this area can be. Longstanding subluxation creates inflammation in this area.
4. Zyphoid. The zyphoid is lightly “toggled” from anterior to posterior. This is very sensitive and should be gently contacted for an exceedingly brief time.
5. Pubis symphysis. The pubis symphysis does not need to be contacted directly. Place the wide fork of the adjusting instrument on the abdomen, above the pubis symphysis, and adjust superior to inferior. As with all KST adjustments, less than a half-second of “toggling” is needed, using light force.
Patients may feel a profound sense of relaxation, as if they are finally letting go. Sometimes, this is accompanied by emotional release. Others may not feel anything immediately, or at all! Everyone is different.
Will the panic pattern return?
Usually, one correction releases the pattern and it does not return unless that patient is traumatized again. It’s good to periodically check patients for this pattern. An easy way to do it is to challenge the coccyx anterior or the sternum superior. If you get a positive finding, check for the rest of the pattern.

Like the discord of an instrument out of tune in a skillful orchestra, innate intelligence can lose its interconnected synchronicity between the motion of all the organs and structures of the body. When this synchronicity is lost, there is always a loss of intrinsic oscillatory motion away from embryonic origin. Embryological evidence proves that powerful and unparalleled ways to clear brain and nervous system interference can be elicited via energy-balancing techniques that balance the three chief organizers of the entire meridian system:
• the Governing Vessel (GV) Meridian or (Du Mo),
• the Conception Vessel (CV or (Ren Mo), and
• the Chung Mo, a “meeting place” or “crossroads of nine meridians” where the main branches of the nervous system, circulatory system and lymphatic system all cross paths in the abdominal region.
Also, this primal energetic zone is the site where tensions accumulate to inhibit the efficiency of how innate intelligence disperses healing energy throughout the body. Hence, the ability of innate intelligence to receive, store and use energy can be restricted through contractions and tensions in this deeper energetic zone.
Since stress is compensated for by GV and CV safety energy circuits located in the sacrum and cranium, balancing the GV, which represents the spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid and the peripheral nervous system, and the CV, which represents the brain or brain interferences, can accelerate patient healing responses and eliminate roadblocks to healing. Although not commonly addressed by American Traditional Chinese Medicine-trained acupuncturists, the integrity and balance of these primal energy networks or extraordinary meridians is crucial to a complete healing response.
Freeing up and tonifying these deeper energetic zones nourishes all visceral functions and reduces constriction of constrained Liver Qi while strengthening the adrenals and reducing stagnant energy in the musculature of the chest and upper back (pericardium energetic zone). Since the embryological origin of the Chung Mo precedes all 12 meridians and the nervous system, the use of passive pre-adjustment techniques can overcome the obstacles to clearing stubborn subluxations or clearing brain interferences that are hard to locate and treat with many chiropractic techniques.
Since the congestion or constriction of Chung Mo energies is the precursor to agitated emotional states (especially inappropriate anger), depression, anxiety, maldigestion and runaway viral infections that cause chronic fatigue and immunosuppression, clearing the body of these energetic blocks will activate a powerful resource of innate intelligence.
Prolonged tensions can traumatize and agitate the fascia, which heals by spider-webbing together with irregularly arranged collagen. Stress on the fascia is aggravated by injuries or sedentary life-styles. Since the fascia limits body motion, it must be viewed to be equally important to the tendons, capsules, and ligaments. Only three weeks of inhibited motion can cause it to lose its flexibility. Most importantly, hypertonic fascia layers trap and squeeze nerve receptors, along with blood and lymph vessels to interfere with innate communication.
The Role of Synbioitc Nutrition in Improving Structural Alignment
Impairments in the function of neurons and connective tissue result from malnutrition and toxicity and are manifested by a reduced range of motion, and chronic subluxations. Learning to evoke and surrender to innate intelligence allows for the successful coordination and control of our physiology. Habituation, the gradual decaying of a nerve cell’s response from prolonged stress, can be corrected with non-stimulatory nourishment and maintains autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance.
Prolonged and uncompensated stress can push the ANS to habituate stress responses. It can cause sustained levels of adrenaline and cortisol that steadily decrease the body’s resistance to infection, inflammation, and tumors of all kinds. The chemistry and physiology of stress create a paradoxical situation: we tend to crave the very reactions which set into motion vicious circles that systematically destroy us and limit our adaptability to stress. Synthetic vitamins and inorganic minerals used in the majority of nutritional supplements fuel this addictive and destructive cycle.
The connective tissue and fascia form an interface via the “ground substance” throughout all systems of the body, even into the innermost parts of each cell. Since the circulatory, nervous system, musculo-skeletal system, the digestive tract, and the organs are ensheathed in connective tissue, it can be viewed as the matrix that determines the overall shape of the organism as well as the detailed architecture of its parts. Plus, the crystalline lattices of the connective tissues represent a semi-conducting communication network that can convey the bioelectric signals of innate intelligence throughout the body. Connective tissue serves as a physical and chemical barrier to the spreading of toxic agents and infections throughout the body.
It provides the fluid-electrical medium for neurons, immune cells and hormones to regulate the body.
The clinical applications of instant cell nourishment via synbioitic-foodgrown™ nutrition nourishes, rather than stimulates, stress defense mechanisms and activates powerful stem cell-like activities via fibroblasts in the connective tissue and glial cells of the nervous system. Nutritional enhancement of glial cells has been documented to foster neuron directionality and neurotrophic activities of dopaminergic neurons, sensory, motor (both PNS & CNS) & ANS cells (J Neurosci Res, 1994;37:1; Chinese J Microsurg, 1993;16:2:125-8) and results in nervous system regeneration, reorganization and proper coordinated functioning (J Neurocyt, 1993;22:436-48; Ann Rev Neurosci 1990;13).
Since fibroblasts are inhibited from sustained levels of adrenaline and cortisol, nourishing cells quickly with synbioitic-foodgrown™ nutrition is critical for maintaining health in today’s polluted world. Environmental stressors (electro-pollution and chemical pollutants) have doubled in the past three years. For example, satellite-generated gigahertz frequencies, used in cell phone and wireless transmission systems, can overload and blow out GV and CV energy circuits, causing excessive Chung Mo and visceral tensions in the abdomen and a loss of adaptability to stress.
If the energetic system cannot compensate properly for stress, stress becomes distress and damages the body. Hence, the Quantum Repatterning Technique or QRT (see Sept-Oct 2003 and Feb 2005 The American Chiropractor magazine for more information) can be used to palpate and free up the deeper energetic zones in the abdomen that relate to spinal alignment. When stress is damaging the body, there is extreme reactivity and tenderness in the CV and Chung Mo meridians. Nourishing these zones allows the connective tissue to synchronize the motion between muscles, vessels, nerves and viscera and transfer appropriate muscle action to the bones. This can help to reduce ligament, fascia and muscular tensions that make it hard for a chiropractor to align the spinal column.
Techniques to clear the GV-20 Spinal Nerve Clearance Zone, the Kidney-Cervical Zone and the Chung Mo Lumbar Kidney Clearance Zone will allow a powerful equalization of energy and establish higher levels of resilience to stress. In the Kidney-Cervical Zone, K-11 and CV-2 are treated. In the Chung Mo Lumbar Kidney Clearance Zone, K-15 and CV-7 (adrenals or yang of the kidneys) are treated. NOTE: These protocols are outlined in detail in my Quantum Repatterning Technique-II manual available at www.quantumenergy.com.
To achieve the full potential of innate intelligence, many challenging, but ultimately solvable, problems must be surmounted. First, we must provide instant cell nourishment to bypass the stress-damaged digestive functions and get nutrients quickly to the cells. Secondly, coherence must be established in the nanotesla-exhahertz range where innate intelligence, via DNA, operates most effectively and where the Chung Mo can be cleared of interference. When coherence is reduced, it is like poor cell phone reception in a mountainous area, as innate communication may not be able to fully transmit, receive, decode, store and answer incoming stimuli via specific systems of the body.
Research with Digital Infrared Thermograph Imaging (DITI) has documented that, when coherence is reestablished, connective tissue inflammation decreases dramatically (see before and after DITI on 52-year old female). Unknown to most nutritionists and naturopaths, it takes living Synbiotic protein-mineral matrixes to fully activate liver detoxification networks and cleanse the spinal nerves and connective tissue of toxins. Hence, nerve interference needs to be treated as a process that involves unwanted inflammation, toxicity, and malnourishment.
This view puts a premium on understanding and defining neural stressors and acknowledges that disease cannot be tied to a single cause.
With this focus, it is possible to enhance innate intelligence above and beyond an adjustment. Clearly, the encoding, transmission, reception and decoding of innate information depend on quantum coherence, a process that is achievable with chiropractic tools such as the Quantumizer-II™ and QuantaWater™ technologies. These new understandings will invigorate chiropractic and enhance patient care—the ultimate goal of any health care practice.
In summary, QRT represents that innate healing in the human body is intertwined in a seamless web of interconnecting systems, all of which contribute to its functional unity and healing capacity. Palpating the deeper energetic zones leads the patient on a journey of discovering where visceral and energetic tension is held in the abdomen. Increasing bodily awareness of the segmented patterns of illness empowers the patient. With increased awareness and bodily-felt recognitions, both the doctor and patient become harmoniously united in philosophy. Patient feedback is instantaneous, as both the patient and doctor acknowledge the rigidity and muscular reactivity in the palpated zones. The patient feels the locked up energy and has some basis for assuming personal responsibility for correcting it with proper nourishment lifestyle changes that do not produce a dependence on stimulation. This personal, sensory engagement provides an opportunity for both the patient and doctor to come to grips with the laws of nature, because strength and health cannot be pumped into anyone who takes a passive role in his/her healing process.
Chiropractic stands to reap significant benefits by expanding its focus on these deeper energetic zones and on ways to nourish neurons and activate fibroblasts that regenerate the body. When we free up deeper tensions, we can access the body’s innate biofeedback communication system. Since Innate is the body’s inner physician, finding ways to keep its multiple lines of communication free and clear of any interference will have positive clinical effects. The power of innate intelligence to heal the body hinges greatly on the openness and functional unity of the entire organism.

The quest for more complete care and sustainable results has come to a new conclusion with the evolutionary creation of a multimodal treatment system that utilizes synergistic functional neurology. This 3-dimensional assessment and treatment system is Trigenics® Myoneural Medicine. With neurology as the key, many doctors now using Trigenics neuromanual methods are claiming it to be the missing element of treatment for which they have long been searching.
Simply defined, Trigenics is a neurological treatment system designed to correct aberrant sensorimotor and energetic function.
From a more detailed perspective, Trigenics is a complex neurological treatment system, which resets the way the brain communicates with the body to instantly relieve pain, increase strength and restore neurokinetic function.
Dr. Frederick Carrick, DC, DACNB, PhD, founder of the American Chiropractic Association diplomate neurology program, gave his perspective with the following quote: “Trigenics is consistent with the principles of neuroplasticity and corticoneural re-organization of the sensorimotor and somatosensory systems.”
According to Dr. Carrick, “It is likely that attenuation of pain from Trigenics treatment is due to combined activation of mechanoreceptors with segmental inhibition of nociception as well as activation of the higher level brain-based descending inhibitory control mechanism. In its most simple form, Trigenics uses multimodal environmental stimulation based upon a motoric window of change.”
With the Trigenics system, a multitude of treatment techniques/modalities are applied at the same time during specific resisted moments to cumulatively affect the peripheral and central nervous systems with resultant brain-based pain relief and improved functionality. As we all quite obviously know, the brain controls all activities of the body, including movement and pain. It makes good sense, therefore, that, if we are to sustainably affect the behaviour and/or perception of tissues and bodily structures that we must first correct aberrant brain communication with procedures that affect the controlling neurology.
From a Western neuromusculoskeletal perspective, Trigenics is designed to do this with the purpose of correcting aberrant sensorimotor and neurokinetic function locally and globally. This, in turn, is meant to set the stage for sustainable correction of aberrant biomechanics, using mechanical soft tissue or osseous manipulative methods when needed. In addition, specialized applications of Trigenics may also be used to treat systemic conditions from an Eastern meridian medicine perspective to correct and balance aberrant neurosomatic energetics.
In understanding the premise of Trigenics’ treatment, it is important to be clear that the purpose of Trigenics is to affect the neurology rather than the histology or osteology. Trigenics is absolutely NOT a soft tissue treatment technique or an osseous thrust manipulation procedure. In the last few years, there has been an increased awareness of manual soft tissue treatments designed to affect aberrant histology through the mechanical breakdown of myofascial adhesions. Because of this and the fact that, during Trigenics procedures, the patient is interactively moving, it has sometimes been incorrectly confused with popular myofascial-release soft-tissue techniques, such as Active Release Technique. Also, because some of the Trigenics assessment procedures involve muscle strength testing and myomeridian work, it has been incorrectly confused with energetic treatments such as Applied Kinesiology. Certain Trigenics procedures involve length testing and neurological enhancement of muscular facilitation and, as a result, it has been confused with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching exercises. Questions have been posed by others who incorrectly draw comparisions of Trigenics with everything from Matrix Repatterning to Chi-gong to Autogenic Hypnotherapy to origin-insertion muscle-activation procedures, such as Touch-For-Health and others.
At the outset, it is important to note that, Trigenics is probably, in some small part, all of the above and also quite absolutely none of the above. This paradox can only be explained by the fact that Trigenics is a brain-based multimodal treatment system designed to synergistically and directly affect neurological communication, This makes Trigenics an evolution in care, as it is an entire treatment system which combines a multitude of treatment techniques/approaches with new advances in enhanced functional neurology, using the patient interactively to generate reflex pathways.
Direct treatment of aberrant neurology has been long overdue and greatly needed, as mechanical osteologic and histologic treatments have not completed the full picture of care. It makes good sense that if one removes the arthrokinetic fixation or myofascial adhesion, but there is a higher center involved, one must reset the neurology first. As such, it is believed that Trigenics is the first of its kind in this new field of corrective, direct neurological treatment.
In some cases, Trigenics works as a stand-alone system of care, although it is often used as an integral and critical component in a multidisciplinary approach to condition correction. From a manual medicine perspective, osseous manipulation, soft tissue techniques, and active rehabilitation may still be needed to achieve complete recovery and correction. All other treatment techniques or methodologies are enhanced with the initial inclusion of Trigenics as a team player in complete care.
Application of Trigenics has restored vitality and hope to many patients who suffer with seemingly intractable pain syndromes and has enabled many doctors to deliver superlative care with less stress in practice while also increasing their income.
It has been 30 years since I first started chiropractic college. Fifteen years into my practice, I was quite busy and relatively successful seeing an average of 100 patients per day. In spite of this, I began to feel that something was missing for me in the way I practiced and the treatment methodologies I was using. I was not able to correct every condition as effectively as I was led to believe I could, within the paradigm and philosophy of a relatively “straight” subluxation based practice. Certainly, most extremity conditions still required additional intervention outside of spinal adjusting or joint manipulation and many spinal conditions improved temporarily but seemed to recur over time.
In the early 80’s, I endeavored to explore various mechanical Western and Eastern medicines, with good results in many cases. One thing I soon discovered was that, when I applied variations of some of these techniques together at the same time, results were often better than when I applied only one. This led me to begin to understand that what I was searching for, and what was still missing in my treatments, could not be found in any one technique. It could only be found in the word synergy. Synergy is what creates the effect of all great formulations. Everything powerful in the universe works on the principle of synergy. Our productivity as human beings, at its highest level, is always synergistically interactive and interdependent, rather than singularly independent. All of the parts and systems of our bodies work synergistically and interdependently. The type of dialectic, non-linear convergent neurological interaction we observe with the effects of Trigenics defines synergy, wherein “the outcome is considerably greater than the sum input.”
Although often effective in treating specific conditions, complementary para-chiropractic treatments basically had the patient as a passive or active recipient rather than an interactive participant. It made inherent sense that the effect of a multimodal treatment system designed to create a synergistic summative result would most assuredly be much greater than if only one modality/technique were applied. (For instance, to increase the power required to run a 1000-watt, large multi-speaker stereo, I had to add a couple more batteries that could be hooked up together for a summative effect.) And so, postulating from a synergistic perspective, I wondered what would happen if a multitude of treatments, which all directly affect the nervous system, were applied simultaneously with the patient by being an interactive participant in the treatment procedures. What if one could get the patient to elicit a barrage of neurological reflexes using biofeedback with resisted movement exercises which were altered and enhanced by application of simultaneous nerve-sensor manipulations by the doctor? This thought occurred to me and I endeavored to find out what the outcome and effect of such a synergistic treatment would be.
Methodology and Technology Development
And so, the original essence of Trigenics began in the early 1980’s with the current treatment system, incorporating enhanced functional neurology.
Because of my knowledge of energetic Eastern medicine through my acupuncture training, I also was led to create an adjunctive system of assessment and treatment using Traditional Chinese Medicine methodologies, which could be used with Trigenics to treat a multitude of general bodily conditions. (This is now referred to as “Trigenics Myomeridian Medicine,” and also enables treatment of systemic conditions.)
Trigenics, as a neurologic and energetic treatment system, was thus born. Continued work and experimentation with a broad range of conditions yielded positive results in many areas and with many different and normally quite complicated and difficult conditions. Lost movement and ranges of motion would suddenly be restored. Weakened muscle strength and power would be very significantly increased. Chronic muscle “knots” that a practitioner would normally have little or no success in releasing would literally melt within seconds. Patients were reporting that they were experiencing a degree of pain relief and functional restoration, in minutes, that no other manual therapies were able to achieve. Cumulative treatments led to sustained improvement and correction. In many cases where the conditions presented were not localized but “systemic” or throughout the body, application of the Trigenics Myomeridian procedures also yielded excellent results.
As a Certified Chiropractic Rehabilitation Doctor, I found that the above findings were particularly applicable in the rehabilitation of personal injuries. Specifically, patients’ “return to pre-accident status” was being attained much more rapidly than ever before. Sports Medicine was of particular interest to me. In this special area, I discovered that I was not only able to attain accelerated results in treatment of sports injuries, but I was able to prevent injuries other than trauma from occurring due to training. I also discovered that specific applications of Trigenics were able to measurably augment and amplify athletic performance and achievement. Almost all the athletes I treated using specific Trigenics muscular strengthening and lengthening procedures were achieving “personal bests” in their respective sports. An entire specific system of assessment and treatment was, thereafter created to augment athletic performance for all sports using Trigenics. This is now referred to as the “Trigenics Sports Power Augmentation.”
Also of immense importance is the fact that a systematic neurokinetic assessment and treatment system has now been developed which can prevent sports injuries from occurring. This is accomplished with Trigenics neurokinetic assessment procedures conducted at regular intervals to detect functional imbalances and potential weak links in the neurokinetic chain, which would result in synergistic dominance and injury, if heavily stressed through competitive sport. Also, it appears, clinically, that specific treatments applied immediately prior to the actual performance or participation will enhance speed and power specific to that sport. This is accomplished by simply applying the Trigenics lengthening and/or strengthening procedures to each muscle that needs to be strengthened or lengthened in that sport to increase overall power and speed specific to the activity required. This is big news, as it represents a breakthrough in the performance enhancement field without the use of drugs.
Trigenics was first applied in elite sports circles in 2003 at the world games in Canada with members of the Canadian athletic team. Subsequently, it has been used with athletes of all professional sports, including basketball, football, hockey and baseball. In 2004, it was used at the Athens Olympics as an official treatment with the Estonian Olympic team on 2 of their athletes who won medals at the games. It was used at the World Athletic Championships in Finland in 2005 and will be at the 2006 winter Olympics in Italy.
The word “TRIGENICS” was created from a combination of two words: Triad and Genesis to describe this hybrid treatment system. Triad means “comprising of three” and the meaning of Genesis is “mode of formation” or “origin.” What makes the Trigenics myoneural treatment system distinctly different is that its mode of formation uniquely and synergistically combines a multitude of treatment techniques for a cumulative effect otherwise not attainable, with simple uni-modal or even more involved bi-modal techniques.
Over the ensuing years, Trigenics procedures were systematically mapped out for the entire body. In 1996, I began writing the Trigenics Procedures and Theory Manuals, as I realized that a school would be needed to pass on the knowledge of this remarkable treatment system. This facilitated formation of The International Institute of Trigenics (IIT) in 1998. Following fulfillment and approval of the necessary accreditation prerequisites, the Canadian government subsequently recognized the Trigenics Institute as a Certified Educational Institution in 1999.
In 2005, National University of Health Sciences granted the Trigenics Institute post-graduate affiliate status for acquisition of CE credits from completion of the Registered Trigenics Physician program.
Plans were soon formulated to commence the first Trigenics course for health practitioners, which was held in the fall of 2000. The RTP designation (Registered Trigenics Physician/Practitioner) was, subsequently born. The RTP course must be successfully completed within 1.5 years.
It is important to note that there is no one technique or treatment which is better than the others. All are effective for treating different conditions and all have their place in the healthcare network. It is never a matter of “better” but simply a matter of which treatment or combination of treatments is most effective and/or needed to treat each different type of condition. It is commonly accepted that joint manipulation is often required in the treatment of aberrant arthrokinetics and osseous dyskinesia. It is also known that treatment of myofascial adhesions often requires application of a soft tissue technique.
Combined application of manipulation and soft tissue treatment is often required in conditions in which both dyskinesia and myofascial adhesions co-exist. However, it is also now apparent that few, if any, neuromusculoskeletal conditions exist without associated aberrant neurology on some level. Direct corrective neurological treatment, therefore, is essential if one is to achieve full correction and sustained results/recovery.
There are innumerable forms of manual medicine and physical therapy. Many have existed for hundreds or even thousands of years. With rapid advances and discoveries in medical knowledge and technology over the last century, many new techniques have evolved. Hybrid treatments have also been created combining aspects of some procedures with others to provide an enhanced outcome. Trigenics Myoneural Medicine is a synergistic neurological treatment system, which has evolved from current concepts and discoveries with respect to etiology and treatment. It is believed that the discovery of how to use interactive, multimodal manual procedures for the corrective reorganization and rerouting of neurological transmission may well lead to the creation of a new therapeutic field called neuromanual medicine. Although Trigenics is the first in this field, it is probable that many will begin to incorporate this methodology into their practices and treatment triage, once the remarkable therapeutic benefits and necessity of such a treatment system is clearly recognized.
Canadian-Estonian chiropractor, Allan Gary Oolo Austin, DC, DNM, DAc, CCRD, CCSP®, FTIMM, is the originator of Trigenics. Over 500 doctors and therapists throughout North America, Australia and Europe have now taken the Trigenics RTP program. For more information, visit

NMT: The Feinberg Technique is a comprehensive system of healing that truly delivers on the promise so much of the world of health care has believed would one day emerge from the field of energetic medicine.
E=MC2 is the famous equation by which Albert Einstein explained that matter and energy were inter-convertible, one to the other, and not the two distinct forms of physical existence they had long been believed to be. Physicists Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, David Bohm and others later described a quantum mechanics worldview that added a third term to this equation—Consciousness—spelled with a capital “C” to differentiate it from the personal consciousness we all experience. Quantum mechanics describes the origin of the first elementary particles from which all energy is composed, which forms all matter as the product of Consciousness. This is the current scientifically accepted physical theory of the universe, and not science fiction. Consciousness is the primary “stuff” from which all that exists in our 4-dimensional space-time universe comes into being in its most primary form—the logos or logic that defines it.
To summarize, the degree that anything exhibits optimal form and function is the degree to which its definition at the level of logic reflects perfection. Similarly, form that is less than optimal and function that is inefficient can be seen to represent definitions at the level of Consciousness, or Logos, that are incoherent, incomplete, or corrupted. So it is seen, at the most primary and indivisible level, that all the world exists as information. So says the physics of the 21st century.
Now, imagine that we permit this quantum mechanics worldview to inform our understanding of health and disease. Remember, if quantum theory is true, and it has been the accepted worldview of physical reality for nearly a century, then quantum mechanics explains all things great and small and not just the world of elementary energetic particles. From the quantum vantage point, we see health as the outcome of an informationally complete and uncorrupted definition of the self that unfolds into physical reality. Similarly, we see illness as the 4-dimensional space-time expression of a definition of the self that is tainted by informational error. Two centuries ago, Samuel Hahnemann described illness as a consequence of informational corruption and he developed his system of homeopathy remedies to improve body function at this informational level. D.D. Palmer used the term “quality interference” to describe the source of disease at an informational level.
The late quantum physicist and philosopher, David Bohm, proposed what he called cycles of “soma significance” by which he explained that the human mind, through conscious intention, could feed back into this informational dimension at which the universe defines all that exists. In so doing, human consciousness can influence this process going forward, modifying the very definition of self by which health or illness unfolds. The psychologist and writer Wayne Dyer has recently popularized the concept that consciousness changes reality, in his television special, entitled The Power of Intention. This understanding has been reflected for decades in the writings of business gurus like Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich). Consciousness is the motive force that manifests what occurs in our personal and our business lives. The now classic movie, What The Bleep Do We Know, has introduced millions of people all over the world to an understandable quantum mechanics worldview. A fundamental paradigm shift has occurred.
NMT: The Feinberg Technique, also known as NMT (NeuroModulation Technique), is a system of “consciousness medicine” that efficiently addresses this fundamental level at which illness and wellness are manifested. The quantum mechanics worldview suggests two very empowering and profound possibilities. 1) Illness may be interpreted on an informational level to exist as a deficiency or corruption of meaning, significance, consciousness, and logic that defines the self. 2) Consciousness can be used, by way of specific therapeutic intention, to alter such informational distortion and, by so doing, improve the blueprint by which physical form and function of the body are determined.
NMT has produced unparalleled results in many patients suffering from degenerative diseases. One such case is documented here with pre- and post-NMT treatment Cavitat images, FDA approved ultrasound bone imaging technology. The image above shows three cavitations, areas of osteonecrosis and bone infection, that were healed completely in 4½ months using only NMT: The Feinberg Technique. The images are intuitive to read with a complete fully-filled cube representing perfectly normal bone. No other such non-surgical healing of bone cavitation has ever been demonstrated in all of medical history to our knowledge. Previous to NMT, the only documented cure for cavitations was surgery, which takes one year to heal, and many of which fail and require repeated surgery.
NMT: The Feinberg Technique produces effects so rapid and profound that those who first witness it are startled. In 27 NMT seminars, I have demonstrated the immediate correction of anaphylactic food allergies such that each of these patients was able to eat those previously allergenic foods—without a single case of anaphylaxis. The photo above is of a patient, anaphylactic to nuts, peanuts, and all shellfish, who flew to our Richland, WA, NMT Advanced Symposium in September ’05 from her home in Florida. She is shown eating coconut shrimp immediately following her NMT allergy treatment. She had no reaction to shellfish, tree nuts, or peanuts after being in NMT treatment for allergy at the seminar. In the three months since she was treated, she has had no allergy symptoms to any of these foods and has included them among her favorite foods.Chronic pain of many years is durably corrected in a matter of minutes.
NMT is used successfully by hundreds of trained health care professionals to resolve autoimmune diseases such as arthridites, Sjogren’s disease, anaphylaxis, asthma, chronic pain, irritable bowel conditions, chronic fatigue, infectious conditions, and emotional problems, among many others. NMT uses simple forms of biofeedback in a way that permits the practitioner to literally look at the way the body has defined its own illness and to immediately correct such confusion in the system and eliminate the reason for illness. NMT should be seen as a powerful integrative approach to health care, compatible with and complementary to allopathic medicine, chiropractic, acupuncture, homeopathy, psychology, and other professions.
