Class of 1952 alumnus Dr. Peter Showan, remembered National University of Health Sciences in his will, generously leaving the university $10,000. Dr. Peter Showan practiced in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania for over 35 years and also earned his diplomate from the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedics (DABCO).

showan240The Showans have had two generations of National graduates in the family. Peter’s daughter, Dr. Nina Showan from the class of 1983, has practiced in Baltimore, Maryland for the past 31 years.

Nina and her sister Ann recently visited the NUHS Illinois campus to present their family’s gift. “My Dad always remembered National, and especially held a great respect for Dr. Joseph Janse, whom he studied under and who led the college back in his day,” she says.

“Dad was a fighter pilot in World War II, and he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. While climbing out of his plane, he slipped on the icy wing and herniated two discs in his back, with pain radiating down both legs,” Dr. Nina Showan recalls. “He went to three orthopedic physicians, and nobody could help him. One of his buddies convinced him to call his chiropractor and that was how he finally recovered. This is also why my father got into the profession himself.”

Dr. Nina Showan also credits her father’s inspiration for why she chose a chiropractic career. “All my life while growing up I heard people say ‘Your dad helped me,’ ‘Your Dad fixed me.’ So those testimonials are how and why I came into the profession.”

“We are so proud when multiple generations in a family become part of our National University legacy,” says NUHS President Joseph Stiefel. “And we are especially grateful to Dr. Peter Showan and his family for choosing to remember our university in this generous way.”

dot-testerSan Diego, CA – April 9th, 2014 – Integrated Practice Solutions, Inc. (IPS), a leading developer in both software and mobile applications for healthcare professionals, is pleased to offer DOT Tester – an iPad app that allows Certified Medical Examiners (CME) the ability to perform Department of Transportation medical examinations efficiently and in a paperless environment – to chiropractors as the mandatory federal exam testing date draws near.

“For the providers currently performing these mandatory DOT tests, a federal exam must be successfully completed by May 21st, 2014, by CMEs or they lose the privilege to perform these tests,” said Robert Moberg, President of Integrated Practice Solutions. “Millions of exams must be completed each year bringing healthy drivers into wellness facilities around the country.  These drivers may never have been exposed to chiropractic practices prior to this mandatory examination law going into effect.”

DOT Tester is the turnkey app to fully support CMEs to conduct and process on-site and off-site DOT medical exams and certificates. The innovative features of DOT Tester include:
  • Creating a mobile exam room that expands the four walls of a practice and provides patients with the convenience of examining them where they work
  • A guided examination process to ensure that each and every exam is complete, with easy drop down menus and charts to speed up recording results without typing
  • Intuitive form elements that allow the examiner to easily navigate through each section, collect patient and provider signatures with just a finger, and retain provider signature for future use
  • The ability to quickly create legible reports and certificates in PDF format, which can be emailed or printed right from the app to the driver or employer

Interested chiropractors can visit or download the App from Apple’s App Store®.

“This is a great opportunity for chiropractors to reach out into their communities, and DOT Tester makes the processing of the DOT driver exams a snap,” added Robert. “There is no paperwork to complete, store, file, or mail – the entire DOT exam can be processed from within the DOT Tester App.”
