Study shows simple elastic resistance exercise effective in significantly reducing pain and increasing muscle strength in the neck and shoulder muscles.

Akron, Ohio – March 5, 2014 – A study recently published in BioMed Research International showed a 40% decrease in neck and shoulder pain intensity and a 6% increase in isometric muscle strength for participants in a 10-week, two-minute daily elastic resistance training program. The study, conducted at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment in Copenhagen, Denmark, investigated the effects of resistance training on occupational muscle activity in 30 female office workers with chronic pain.

neckpainchronic“The increase in the number of individuals working in sedentary careers coupled with their time spent in front of a computer increases the time of static body postures and repetitive movements of the arm, shoulder and hands, which has been associated with the development of musculoskeletal disorders,” stated Lars L. Andersen, PhD, researcher with the National Research Centre for the Working Environment. “This has both individual and social consequences as neck and shoulder pain has been show to increase the risk for long-term absence from work. Females may be at higher risk due to the differences in work tasks, work techniques and possible lower muscle strength. Review of previous studies show that women with a history of neck pain are the strongest predictors for the development of neck pain for those working with computers, thus our study included only female participants.”

This 30-participant study is nested in a larger randomized control trial of 198 participants. That trial utilized TheraBand™ Elastic Tubing with handles for an exercise routine using only one exercise for either two or 12 minutes and participants were randomly assigned to either a non-exercising control group, a two-minute exercise group, or a 12-minute exercise group. The exercise groups performed a lateral raise with the arm slightly in front of the body while using elastic tubing for resistance. After 10 weeks, both exercise groups significantly reduced their neck/shoulder pain and tenderness, and significantly increased their strength compared to the control group. There was no significant difference between the exercise groups.

For this recent 30-participatnt analysis, half of the workers participated in the daily two-minute training program while a control group of 15 received weekly e-mail information on general health. The researchers were particularly interested in the mechanisms of pain reduction in the group performing a single set of exercises to failure within two minutes and the resulting EMG measurements. These time-consuming daily measurements were not possible within the larger trial.

After the 10-week program, the researchers concluded that the single set of two-minute TheraBand exercise to failure can significantly reduce pain and tenderness in female office workers with neck/shoulder pain.

Office workers and companies can purchase TheraBand Elastic Tubing referenced in the research at www.performancehealth.com.

Walk safely, before you get out on your walk consider these safety tips- wear brightly colored clothing if you walk in the dark, walk with a group if you can, make sure someone knows your routine of when and where you walk, do not wear jewelry or headphones, be aware of your surroundings and stretch to warm up. Use a log, journal or smartphone app to track your walks, miles and time. If you walk the same route its fun to see your times improve as your strength improves. Have fun and reward yourself!

diseasedelusionbookcoverAliso Viejo, CA (March 17, 2014) Metagenics, Inc., a nutrigenomics and lifestyle medicine company focused on improving health, today announced that it will sponsor special book signing receptions in select North American cities to launch the latest book by Jeffrey Bland, PhD—The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Illness for a Healthier, Longer and Happier Life (HarperWave, May 2014). These events are tailored specifically for healthcare practitioners to learn about the future of medicine—health care rather than disease care—as seen through the eyes of the "Father of Functional Medicine."

In his newest book, Dr. Bland introduces the reader to the medicine of the 21st century. It is medicine that is personalized to the specific needs of the person to result in health, not just the treatment of the symptoms of disease. This form of health care, which Dr. Bland defines as functional medicine, focuses on the understanding of the cause of chronic illness and its treatment using a blended approach of lifestyle, diet, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals. The Disease Delusion provides a personalized approach to the prevention and management of chronic illnesses through the application of breakthrough discoveries in health science made in the past 10 years—whether the concern is diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, dementia, autism, obesity, chronic fatigue or pain, or a feeling of premature aging.

Advance praise for The Disease Delusion:

“The godfather of functional medicine elegantly explains the core tools to overcome the chronic ailments of modern society.”
—Mehmet Oz, MD, Emmy award-winning host of "The Dr. Oz Show"

“Dr. Bland’s book should be a textbook in medical schools all over the world. It can change your life.”
—Alejandro Junger, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Clean and Clean Gut

“No one has done more to advance nutritional medicine throughout the world than Dr. Jeff Bland. He has served not only as a teacher but also as an inspiration to so many doctors who realized the old disease diagnosis and treatment model failed most of their patients. Readers will find wisdom and hope in this excellent book.”
—Joseph Pizzorno, ND; founder, Bastyr University: coauthor, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine; editor-in-chief of Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal

At the receptions sponsored by Metagenics, Dr. Bland will give healthcare practitioners an inside look at how his new book can help change patient focus to health care, along with an overview of his approach to personalized lifestyle medicine. These events will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the following cities:
