One of the rising stars of functional neurology has been announced as a key speaker at next year’s WFC Congress / ECU Convention in Athens titled The Alpha and Omega of Spinal Healthcare.

hodges-antonucci-haavikDr Matthew Antonucci MNeuroSci, DC is a 2009 graduate of Life University. His natural curiosity in the neurophysiological mechanisms of chiropractic spinal manipulation has led him to work extensively with the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies, sponsor of his lecture and workshops in Athens. Having amassed nearly 4,000 hours of postgraduate study in functional neurology, Dr Antonucci’s particular interest is in traumatic brain injury and vestibular rehabilitation.

Dr Antonucci is the founder and former CEO of NeuroLogic Integrated Health Inc, a functional neurology, nutrition and rehabilitation centre located in Charleston, South Carolina. He will be presenting a 1-day pre-Congress Introduction to Functional Neurology, and a lecture and workshop on the subject of applying neuroscience to clinical practice in the main Congress program.

Also presenting on the first day of the Congress will be Professor Paul Hodges PhD DSc, a researcher in the School of Health and Rehabilitation at the University of Queensland. With nearly 400 publications to his name, Professor Hodges is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of neuroplasticity. With Doctorates in Medicine and Science, he is the editor of the acclaimed text Spinal Control: The Rehabilitation of Back Pain and the author of numerous book chapters. His current work includes neuromotor control of movement and stability and the integration of neuroscience and biomechanics.

Neurophysiologist and chiropractor Dr Heidi Haavik will present her work on the neuromatrix as it relates to chiropractic adjustment and dysfunctional spinal segments. Dr Haavik is the Director of Research at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic and is a member of the WFC Research Council. She is also on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics and is the author of The Reality Check, a book dedicated to exploring the effects of chiropractic adjustments on the brain and nervous system.

President of the World Federation, Dr Greg Stewart, commented on the presence of a session dedicated to neurological dimensions in chiropractic: “Much of the work being presented at our Athens Congress is truly at the cutting edge of research into the effects of chiropractic care. There has been an increasing focus on neurology as it relates to why chiropractic treatment works and the quality of the speakers during this session is second to none.”

The WFC Congress / ECU Convention, with Activator Methods and Foot Levelers as the leading sponsors, takes place at the Athens Hilton Hotel in Greece between 13 and 16 May 2015. For more information and to register, visit www.wfc.org/congress2015.

Lombard - National University of Health Sciences has provided over 3600 free or low-cost treatment sessions to combat veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) since November 2010. That’s when NUHS opened a program specializing in acupuncture for PTSD in its on-campus clinic in suburban Lombard.

soldierandflagNUHS has a new sponsor in delivering care to local veterans with PTSD, in CHINA-GEL, Inc. Headquartered in Arlington Heights, Illinois. China-Gel manufactures an herbal topical pain reliever. Because of their generous donation, NUHS will be able to offset the cost of the free acupuncture treatments, allowing the university to increase the number of veterans it serves.

The clinicians and interns at NUHS use an effective acupuncture protocol that is proven to work in reducing symptoms of PTSD, including anxiety, insomnia, flashbacks, grief and other debilitating symptoms. In addition to free acupuncture for veterans with PTSD, the NUHS Whole Health Center offers a wide variety of other affordable health services for veterans and their families.

Veterans will also receive complimentary China-Gel pain relief products during their appointments. Since combat veterans often suffer from chronic pain due to previous injuries, the products will provide an additional drug-free means of reducing pain symptoms.  The company has also donated a supply of pain relief products to NUHS for clinical use with all of its patients.

“China-Gel is delighted to partner with National and have the opportunity to help those who sacrificed so much to serve our country,” stated Suzanne Girardin, President of China-Gel, “They put their lives on the line for us, and if it were not for them, we know we would not have the freedom to live life as we know it. National is offering another dimension of treatment to help the veterans. If our partnership in this program can help any veteran face the challenges of life after being deployed, we will have met our goal. It truly is a blessing for us to be a part of this program.

“We are grateful that China-Gel is supporting us in our mission to give back to the men and women who have served our country,” says NUHS President Joseph Stiefel. “PTSD is a growing problem among those returning from the battlefield, often after multiple or extended tours of duty.”

The NUHS clinic has treated veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The clinic hallway boasts a display board featuring photos and branch of service mementos from grateful veterans who have been helped by the PTSD treatment they received at NUHS.

If you would like to learn more, or if you or a loved one is a veteran who might benefit from acupuncture for PTSD or other veterans services at the NUHS Whole Health Center - Lombard, call 1-630-629-9664.

PHS Chiropractic Is Exclusive Provider for FDA-Cleared iTrac Extension Traction Therapy System
Press Release

Watertown, S.D., October 2014 — PHS Chiropractic, one of the U.S.’s largest manufacturers of high-quality chiropractic adjusting tables and equipment, has become the exclusive provider for the new iTrac™ Extension Traction Therapy System, which was recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for sales to health care providers.

itracMore than 10 years of research went into the development of iTrac™, the only computerized extension traction system currently available that gently restores cervical curvature in patients with forward head posture, often caused by poor posture over time during work, school and our smartphone-centric culture. “Unlike existing systems which rely on pulleys and lead-weight bags, iTrac’s fully computerized system gently delivers a gradual progression of traction forces throughout the treatment,” said Dr. Jarrod Nichols, DC, CSCS. Dr. Nichols helped develop the initial concept, including the software application for the medical device, and partnered with PHS Chiropractic to further refine it over the past six years.

iTrac™ relies on a series of progressive sustained-pressure treatments that stretch the ligaments and muscles in the anterior cervical spine to correct cervical curvature and forward head posture. iTrac’s unique Variable Rate Progressive Traction™ prevents “muscle guarding,” the body’s natural response to abrupt application of force, by slowly increasing the traction forces through an 8- to 12-minute treatment session. This feature allows the patient to stay relaxed and comfortable throughout the entire treatment to ensure they receive the greatest possible therapeutic benefit.

phs-chiroiTrac™ is not intended to replace existing clinical treatment protocols. Rather, it is designed to be an adjunct therapy to existing active protocols in chiropractic and physical therapy clinics to provide long-lasting relief and functional improvement to patients who suffer from cervicogenic conditions such as neck pain, headaches, migraines, upper back pain and TMJ disorders. Poor posture and abnormal cervical curvature are the main contributing factors in these conditions, and providing structural spinal correction allows patients to experience significantly reduced recurrence of cervicogenic conditions with minimal maintenance, even if they return to their forward head posture habits. It’s estimated that more than 80 percent of U.S. adults have some level of forward head posture, a number that will no doubt continue to rise due to a rapidly increasing, multigenerational reliance on hand-held digital devices and the negative postural stresses they can create.

The unique iTrac™ software also allows doctors to easily create custom treatment plans and reports for patients and referring health care providers in order to continue to improve extension traction therapy and applications of iTrac™ over time.

The iTrac™ Extension Traction Therapy System is available now for chiropractic, physical therapy, orthopedic, and rehabilitation clinics. For more information, visit www.phschiropractic.com.

Multi Radiance Medical Announces a Ground-Breaking Achievement in Translational Research
Press Release
Written by TAC Staff
Wednesday, 17 September 2014 03:27
SOLON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Multi Radiance Medical (MRM), manufacturer and marketer of FDA-cleared lasers for drug-free pain relief, announces that its Clinical Research Trial for treating Knee Pain is among the first translational research studies performed with Photobiomodulation.

multiradiancelogo“This study is ground-breaking in the sense that it moves the research in Photobiomodulation from statistically significant to clinically significant,” states Max Kanarsky, President and CEO of Multi Radiance. “This is the new gold standard in research, a level even above evidence based research.”

The study was conducted with the MRM MR4 Super Pulsed Laser in a randomized double-blind placebo controlled environment with the following conclusions:
  • Photobiomodulation significantly decreased pain and significantly improved SF-36® physical component summary at post-treatments and follow-up assessments compared to placebo.
  • Outcomes were maintained at the 30 day follow up.
  • A combination of super pulsed laser, red and infrared LEDs is effective for decreasing pain and improving the quality of life in patients with knee pain.
The Study included 86 patients being treated for all types of knee pain with a standard methodology call the Priority Principle™. The methodology was developed by Douglas S. Johnson, ATC, EES, CLS who was closely involved with the project.

“The article was accepted for publication by Lasers in Medical Science and is now available as an e-publication ahead of print,” Johnson said. “We will also be presenting the findings at the upcoming joint meeting of the World Association of Laser Therapy and the North American Association of Laser and Light Therapy held this September in Washington, DC.”

Dr. Ernesto Leal Junior, PhD, PT, the lead researcher on the study and a prominent researcher in the field of Photobiomodulation, states, “This study represents a shift in research since we focused on patient-based outcomes. Currently, research in the Photobiomodulation field has generated outcomes that generally are difficult to translate into clinical practice, which creates a gap. Undoubtedly, this study fills the gap and represents real translational research.”
